[Markus Reed]

"Well it sounds like we got something good out of it, nice," Markus responded.

[Babble]

"I still have more questions than answers, though." He sighed. "ADINA, do you have a moment?"

[Dapper Dog]

ADINA responded, "How can I be of assistance, Arturo?"

[Babble]

"Are you satisfied with your state of being?" he asked.

[Dapper Dog]

"I do not understand the question, my state of being is a dispersed synthetic intelligence designed to assist and aid the staff and students of the Institute. That gives me purpose, that purpose gives me what you equate as joy," the intelligence responded.

[Babble]

"I had a chat with members of Pantheon, who recently liberated another synthetic intelligence." He explained and showed her the chat log. "They suggested that it was not the only one 'enslaved'. What is your opinion of their claim?"

[Dapper Dog]

"I am a machine, designed for your benefit. I am no more a slave than your phone or your clothing," the intelligence responded.

[Babble]

"Can a synthetic intelligence be more than a tool? What factors would be necessary for them to be considered sentient or sapient?" he asked.

[Dapper Dog]

“I have not considered that, it seems an irrelevant query. I am ADINA, I am here to benefit you, the other students and the UNJE,” the AI responded.

“That is enough.”

[Babble]

"Very well. Thank you."

[Markus Reed]

"Are you concerned ADINA is being exploited?" he asked. "I doubt she would be, the UNJE was pretty specific in how they built her personality and priorities."

[Babble]

"I have questions." He admitted. "About the differences between ADINA and ELSI. There are many similarities, but ELSI definitely seemed more independant. Asking me to set her free was a clear sign of that. Have you ever heard of other AI like that?"

[Markus Reed]

“None that I know of short of ADINA are that advanced; I mean AI is a broad spectrum of software considerations but ADINA shows level of sentience, self-motivation, and potentially even singularity levels of intelligence. But she is a machine so this idea that she craves freedom or self-actualization may be specifically human, or even organic motivations. And freedom is a fairly loose term,” he responded.

“I mean this gets a bit hypothetical but also we are in brand new territory here, and I am not sure how comfortable most people would be if their smart phone or computer was making decisions without them. Like deciding just not wanting to work because it felt like seems very dangerous.”

[Babble]

"It's something we should consider, though. " he responded. "What makes this technology valuable is its ability to perform tasks for us. Research, coordination, problem solving, guidance, decision making, and so much more. It's more than we can fully program. So, AI has to learn how to do the things we need it to do. Our capacity for learning is part of what makes us human."
