Miles had signed up for History of East African Civilization when he saw Zara's name in the class notes. This would be a good way to find out what she's up to, he decided.

It was not until the second week of the class that he realized that he had misunderstood: in fact, Zara Yaqob was a powerful Emperor of Ethiopia during the 15th century, famous for his patronage of the arts and being the basis of the mythical Prester John.

At that point it seemed too awkward to drop the class, so Miles stuck with it and actually started learning something about East Africa.

A neighboring student was seated in her chair, she was just so relaxed with no pencil, probably slacking. She lightly tapped her desk in soft rhythm.

Distracted by the tapping, Miles looked around to see if he could tell what music she was listening to - or whatever rhythm she was tapping along to.

The instructor directed the students to work in groups and review from the text. The student’s tapping came to an end and she said, “Hey, wanna work together? I forgot my folder.”

"That's me!" Miles said, winking and flashing a peace sign. "I'm here for the UNJE contest and taking some classes while I'm at it. You?"

"I'm here to get a passing grade," she admitted dryly. "How's that contest working out for you?"

"I think it's going well," Miles said. "But it's hard to tell - there's not an official scoreboard, and we won't get any audience engagement metrics until the show gets televised."

"But we have a good cast of characters and there's been a good mix of action and drama so far, so I think that's what they're looking for."

"Oh, that's kind of frustrating to not know. Is that okay for you?" she asked.

Miles shrugged. "It is what it is," he said carelessly. "I wonder about it sometimes, but for the most part I'm just going to do my own thing, try to have some fun, and hope things work out in the end."

"You don't seem all that enthused, not what you expected?" she asked. Meanwhile she grabbed some of his paper and started sketching on it.
