[Day 2, EN] - Grilled (Open)

The interview, insanely tasteless ad and vigil had in combination made Iris realise she didn't actually know many of the other contestants. At least not beyond a name and face.

And while living in the same house resulted in a certain amount of passive knowing (including who did their dishes and desperately needed to shower more) it didn't really count as knowing.

So when she'd returned after a long day of being filmed having a long day she'd headed for the kitchen and decided to prepare a little more of her pre-'stay up late listening to bad music and feeling angsty' snack.

In this case it was a grilled cheese with a dangerous amount of feta and and mozzarella combined with peppers, olives and onion. What better way to lure someone out than the smell of melting cheese?

Sliding a piece off the hotplate with a spatula she bites down with a pleasing 'crunch' followed by a minor cheese eruption. Hmmm, given the cholesterol maybe she needed super arteries too.

In the living room Ayana was wearing an oversized t-shirt and shorts while she worked on some homework. The smell of the cheese reminded her that she had not eaten.

"Hey, Ayana, right? Peppers or no peppers?"
She pushes the two options towards the contestant.

Raul wanders on, waving them on as he finished his day's strenuous tasks. With a nod and a smile, he looks at the two ladies and moves towards the fridge. "Hola, chicas." Pulling out some wrapped up cornbread and chili, he grabs a bowl and cuts himself a slice of one before placing it in a bowl and piling it on with chili. "Was told we had some pan de maíz and chili, had to get some; Don't mind me. Sandwhich smells good, though. Need to explore more about what we got in this fridge, for real."

He placed the bowl in the microwave and waited by as he eyed the two ladies and nodding.

Iris raises an eyebrow with a slight smile.

"Well, I know Ayana here is going to make the right choice as to the superior snack."

"That Bea girl got me craving it all afternoon, though, no doubt. Said to add honey to it too, but I dunno about that. Sweet and savory I guess works.." He smiled at her widely, showing his teeth. "Not to knock your thing, though. Never had Greek grilled cheese before. Or Greek anything for that matter."

Iris picks up another sandwich and continues munching happily, fiddling around with her free hand for a napkin.

"You seem like a gyros guy, I think you're missing out. And Bee, she told you to add honey? Was she maybe joking?"
Maybe that was how Bees got their buzz?

"Maybe we could do cultural nights? Have people cook food from their homes? Then at least by the end of the competition we'd know a bit more about eachother and be well fed."

"Uhh, peppers?" she asked. "What are you making?"

She slides over the sandwich with a few hints of red peppers sticking out.

"It's nothing crazy, just grilled cheese sandwiches, which nearly everyone loves. But I tossed in some ingredients from home."

Ticking off her fingers.
"Red peppers, kalamata olives, Greek pepperoncini, feta. And then a bunch of stuff that is terrible for you but taste great, like butter. I'd have used haloumi but that's a very different vibe."

“I have never had a grilled cheese sandwich,” she admitted looking at the sandwich. “But it smells interesting.”

Iris looks at Ayana, then Gauss, then back to Ayana.

"...Wait what? How? Why? If it's a vegan thing I respect that, but it doesn't sound like it's a vegan thing."

[Ayana Kebede]

"Just not something we had," she said honestly. "Tibs or fir fir, or gored gored... my father makes some great samosas."

[Gauss]

"Yeah, mami said it was 'white people food' and wouldn't make some stuff. Same with grilled cheese too. Would do some stuff outside of Mexican and Cuban food, but she had to make it 'ethnic' and added 'flavor'." He ?akes air quotes as he spoke those words and in a mocking high-pitch tone. "Still, Papi, being white and all, took me out for that 'white people food', so it's not like I ate nothing but black beans and plantains growing up." Raul chuckled and looked around for some cameras. "...please don't let that be in the show, or I will get my ass beat for mocking her back..."

The microwave beeped and he pulled out the bowl. "If you can make like half a sandwhich, I can try that Greek goodness. So it's 'Gyros...' always thought it was pronounced 'gairos.' Either way, I'm game. I can make a decent Cuban Sandwhich."

[Iris Pythia]

"Just not something we had," she said honestly. "Tibs or fir fir, or gored gored... my father makes some great samosas."

"All good things. But now we're going to change your life for the better, and your cholesterol for the worse."

"Sounds like an interesting time growing up. America, right? More exciting cuisine times than I had growing up."

"You can put that on the show, no way my mom would come down here to defend grilled cheese."

And back to Gauss.
"I can make you a little one, it's pretty simple at the end of the day. Besides, big time athlete like you probably has to eat right most of the time?"

"Thanks, I think," she offered.

[Gauss]

"I can afford the occasional late night unhealthy treat. Just means I work harder to burn it off in the early hours morning." He takes the bowl out and looks around for some honey to put it on. "Least real honey isn',t too bad for you. Bea seems like the type to want to use that over store stuff."

An eye opens at the nape of Iris' neck.

"Pantry on the right, bottom shelf, behind the bag of flour."

[Gauss]

He nearly jumped when Iris did that, but caught the bowl. "Damn, chica, that's crazy! " Placing the bowl down, he followed the directions and went to the pantry, pulling out a honey bear-shaped container. "Thank you; saved me a lot of trouble. God truly blessed me by not giving my mami that power. Would have had my ass beat more than I did if she could pull out extra eyes like that."

"Hmmm? Oh, the eye thing?"
It swivels around and gives Gauss a look before disappearing.

"It is a bit weird I guess. But like, low end weird. They're just eyes. Most people have multiple."

Iris resists the temptation to open multiple multiples.

"Let me tell yah, you're not wrong. Growing up with a family that can see everything. Super rough, like being in a passive-aggressive panopticon. But eventually you get old enough everyone agrees to stop spying on eachother...mostly."

"Wait, so all of you family can do that eye thing?" His eyes widen before he shook his head. "That's something. Yeah, glad you've seemingly made it out of there without feeling like there's watching over you shoulder all the time. Feel like I'd have to live in a metal box or something to be at ease." Raul grabs the honey and begins to apply to the reheated meal.

He shrugs, grabs a spoon and sticks some in his mouth and pauses while chewing.

"Y'know...had my doubts going in, but honey, well, it kinda works. Makes sense, I guess, honey and spice. Not too uncommon to mix them together." He takes another bite and makes a high pitch noise as he chews. "Hear that, he looks at the camera, holding up the bowl. "Honey Chili, spread the word. It ain't bad."
