She was rattled. Afraid. Troubled. Very worried about Frankie.

"It was not ideal, no. But that is good, it will not always be ideal and you must know what to do then. Maybe Frankie makes it out and learns ou maybe she doesn't make it because she never learned, but we learn. No?

The police are people. They can be just as bad as anyone else doing crime. In Rio, the police are worse than the gangs. It may be a few, it may be all. It makes no difference. If they are part of the problem, we are the solution."

She nodded. He seemed to take it all in stride. There was a comfort in that.

"I believe the police will be part of the solution, too. There are good people everywhere, but particularly in service professions. There will be good people who cannot be bought. We just need to find them and work together."

[Camilo Batista]

"Claro. I do not mean to say all this or all that, maybe the opposite. No? Not all cops good or bad, just like all other people. No group all good or all bad. We are only solution to the ones who are the problem. Maybe the ones there too close to see problem or do not have power, but we have the power to be the solution."

Seemingly out of nowhere, Camilo laughed to himself. "I was about to say unless you can read minds you can't know whether they are good or bad and can't risk it, but this is not a problem for you. No? You take control or read the mind?"

"I could always try. But I do not do that randomly. I try to limit it to gathering information from those who have proven themselves criminal, so to prevent further harm."

"And I can only control a person's thoughts and actions briefly. I can calm a sudden anger or panic. I can pacify a person so they do not take violent action. So they pause. So they set down a weapon or surrender long enough to be restrained. But a strong willed person can resist. It does not always work."

Camilo nods along, "That is very admirável. Porém if you do not know if someone is bom ou ruim is it not better to check? If there is something like these corrupt cops and you work with the good cops to catch the bad cops, but there are bad cops among the ones you work with, they may tell the others. Maybe even set up a trap and hurt you and the good cops. Many innocent people could be hurt. You could be hurt."

"That is a risk. Maybe a good cop would not mind my checking that they meant me no harm before I went alone with them somewhere, to give them the intel. I have a good feeling about Detective Nasir who came to the apartment fire after the gang fight."

[Camilo Batista]

"These bad people can be very convincing. It is sometimes the ones who you have the best feeling about that can do the most harm. No?" Camilo also had a healthy skepticism about Bea's judgement of character since she'd been associating with Lil Shit. "In the telenovela, there is always the twist where the most trustworthy person betrays. Life imitates art. No?"

She nodded.

"It is hard. I believe most people have good in them. And that trust brings out the best in others. Usually. But i really didn't think a security guard at a club would escalate to fatal violence unprovoked. Frankie had tried to sneak past, sure. But she didn't resist. She didn't fight back. What an insane decision to attack like that."

She paused and then added: "I am so glad you were there Camilo. This has all been so crazy. There's no question I'm out of my depth."

"Sim, sim. These people, the gangs the triads, they do not live the same lives that we do. To them life has no value and so why would they hesitate to take it. No? It would be like you not throwing away an empty coffee cup because it may have uma mamãe e um papai. There is no mamãe ou papai in their mind, only the trash in the way.

I am glad too that I was there. Because I could heal Frankie One and take the injury. But I would not feel so out of my depth. This is why we are at the Institute. No? To learn the lessons to be a better Justice Elite."
