The black sedan pulled up in front of the farm house, amidst the golden fields of maize. It was a breezy but warm morning. Janet opened the door and then waited to see the reaction of her ward.

Stepping out of the car and putting her backpack on her back Shadow adjusted her hood to allow her to see better before looking up at the farm. She then turned around to look at the fields, and beyond.

"It really is all empty" she commented quietly, before walking towards the building.

“Yeah it is,” she said walking towards the main house. She walked up the wooden steps and stuck in a metal key and then opend the door to reveal the interior, rustic but clean.

She said over her shoulder, “The pantry is stocked, are you vegetarian?”

Shadow followed, pausing outside to look up at the windows before following in again.

"I'm not" she confirmed with a shake of the head, before moving on to walk around the farm and inspect all the rooms.

"You did missions here on your own? It's big enough to have multiple people."

“I was just going to say we had vegetarian and even vegan options… but guess it isn’t needed,” she said walking and looking around.

“Sometimes I was here alone, most times I was here with a team. These days, the state of the world is different we don’t have the DCP to worry about, and even China is trying to play nice. So it does not see much use.”

"So no hidden jail cells" the girl commented which seemed like a joke but with her history it was likely not.

"I can eat anything, couldn't afford to be picky. vegen options were usually more expensive and I didn't want to waste the money. Still, I think I'd work better out here."

“Full disclosure, the basement has been used to detain people from time to time,” she responded.

She turned around at that.

"Where?"

Janet showed her the way through the kitchen and down the stairs it looked like a normal basement but there did look to be steel hooks from the ceiling, or holders. Janet said, “We usually didn’t bring people back here, but sometimes we needed to apply advanced interrogation to get what we needed.”

When they got to the basement the girl stopped. With her hood up it wasn't easy to see what expression she had but she stared at the hooks. She didn't speak, nor even make a sound, just stared at them.

After what felt like forever she turned and walked out of the basement. Up the stairs, seemingly completely calmly.

Janet followed and said, "You going to freak out?"

"If I was going to freak out you'd be batting away ice right now" she replied in a flat tone as she got to the top of the stairs, taking a few steps into the room and then stopping with her hand on the door.

“It’s a shit world out there, but we are still the good guys. I am being honey here because you deserve honesty. And speaking of honey the downstairs bathroom is a little janky, so I hope you are good with a plunger,” she offered.

“But that’s about it.”

"I know."

There was a pause.

"Can you move please."

"Yeah," she said quizzically and stepped aside.

She waited a few moments before turning around and slamming the basement door as hard as she could. It wasn't that hard as she wasn't the strongest but it made a loud sound.

"Better."

She spun on her heels and walked out of the room.

Janet did not follow, she allowed the woman her space and went to check the rest of the house.

Having left the room and got away from it, the girl took a deep breath. She felt better after slamming the door, and with that decided it was time to find her way up. The building looked like it had higher floors, and not just the barn. So she went looking for stairs.

The second floor was bedrooms and one room that was a library with books haphazardly placed on shelves lining the walls.

And a bathroom.

Picking the smallest bedroom to put her bag down, she went back through into the library and started going over the books. Not reading them, just checking the spines to see what kind of books were being kept and picking a few up to check. It's where Janet would find her, just going through the books.
