[Day 2, EA, Open] Elite Physics

This University campus is a sprawling and well equipped educational institution, funded jointly by the regional gov't and the UNJE it provides free upper education to the region. The majority of academic classes the students at the Institute take are held at this campus which is co-located with the Institute, but still distinct.

[Day 2, EA, Open] Elite Physics

Post by Babble »

The laws of physics remained the fundamental principles of how the universe behaved. Elite abilities, however, often challenged those constants. The limits of what is possible are no longer as clear. This fascinated Arturo. But, it was also frustratingly hard to understand clearly.

He sat at the back of the class hoping for clarity.

The instructor was an Ethiopian woman in her sixties, she was quite knowledgeable if a bit dry in her delivery. The students did their best to keep up as the classroom was a wide auditorium style. He can see the varying radio waves from mobile devices connecting to towers through the room, which is totally not distracting.

The current subject was motion and equations covering the subject.

Miles was in the auditorium as well, listening intently. As far as he could tell, being able to instantly teleport around violated all kinds of classical mechanics, so Miles was very curious as to how Elite powers would fit into the motion model that the physics teacher was lecturing on.

For the day there seemed to be someone new. Someone with a smallish frame, wearing baggy jeans and a hoodie with a large hood over the persons head. She had approached the instructor at the start of the lessons, speaking to them quietly and letting them know that she had been invited by Doctor Eskander Alshiza to observe lessons, and assuming the women had no objections she would remain quiet and out of the way. So out of the way she was, at the back of the room listening quietly.

It felt like the instructor's lecture style was stretching time. Arturo stretched abd looked around.

She was stretching time, at the midway point she assigned some problem on the board and allowed the class to work in groups to solve them.

"Sure!" Miles said, moving over to sit near Arturo. "So, to figure out how long it takes the cylinder to roll down the ramp, I'm thinking we have to figure out the forward motion based on splitting gravity into a forward vector and an, umm, normal vector? Something like that? What do you think?"

"No problem," Miles said, welcoming Mark to the study group. "We can check each other's work, to make sure the math adds up."

"Hey, I'm just a guy," Miles commented. "Especially compared to the other Elites around here. I'm not on fire, or made of bees, or anything like that. 'Normal' is relative, I guess!"

"True. But, you are a bit of a physics headache. I'm not ready to think about the science of teleportation." Arturo chuckled.

"Yeah, I was hoping to get some understanding of how the physics of that works," Miles admitted. "Teleporting messes up both Newton's and Einstein's theories. You know I can teleport from a moving train to a stationary platform without even losing my balance? That's not supposed to be possible according to 'normal' physics. And I'm not even the only person who can teleport here!"

"So, you don't have to worry about falling either?" he asked. "That's amazing."

“I read some articles and saw a talk on this, the leading theory as that Elites generate like a field around them that allows them to bend the laws of known physics. Like lift things that should split in half due to mass or teleportation. I can probably pull it up, think there’s a video on it,” he responded.

"Kind of?" Miles said uncertainly. "If I can react in time, I think I could avoid falling. But if it happens too fast, maybe it would still be bad. I ... haven't tried testing it out too much, it seems risky."

"Sure, send me a link," Miles said. "A 'field that bends the laws of physics' seems like kind of a cheat though? Shouldn't physics always work?"

"I definitely don't want you jumping off a building. But, if your teleportation compensates for the speed and momentum of a train, then it should do the same when your falling." Arturo said. "But, that would need careful testing."
