"Not even caffeine free! I should add - some folks do - there is variation in the community. But my family and local host families have always kept it strict. And I figure I can be a good role model for kids watching. Whatever your beliefs, it's okay to be different. Stick up for who you are, and the right people won't mind a bit."
"I appreciate that kind of mentality, Bea; no downside to trying to be that kind of role model for people. Hopefully you do well enough to leave that sort of example for people. That being said, I won't be joining you in solidarity for your drinking choices; I need my caffeine in the morning."

For a whole lot of reasons.

"I built my car, well I restored it," she said as she doom scrolled on her phone.
"Forget school; can you I learn under you?" Raul laughed and looked at the two of them. "That's pretty cool. Farm life too, that's nice. Don't know how to sleep without some hustle outside, but the few times I've been out to one, it's a trip. I love looking into the night sky and seeing nothing but darkness and stars."

“Sure,” she said and then looked down at her phone. “You guys are superhuman, so restoring a car seems pretty minor in comparison.”

She tapped at her phone.

"I think we're just human, with weird abilities that make some things easier for us. But I have lots of admiration for folks doing all the stuff I can't do. Like taking college courses, fixing a car, all kinds of stuff!"

"Exactly; don't sell yourself short. Just cause you can't blast people with energy beams doesn't mean what you can do holds no value." Raul nods. "Not too many people can rebuild a car, especially self-taught."

"Thanks," she said though it was not terribly convincing. "I never asked, but what can you do?"

"Magnetism." He floats up slightly off the ground to display it. "No, I can't reach for metal things far away, and most of what I can do is not meant for indoors in small spaces with lots of people around. This maglev move is about my only indoor, tight-space, civilian friendly power. Probably a few videos of my fights online if you want to see what I can do with, though."

Bea smiled.

A deep breath. Maybe a little shy to say this out loud.

"I can calm people so they aren't scared or angry. I can pacify them so they pause and don't cause harm. I can split my awareness and see all the rooms in a building, or around all the corners in a general area, at the same time. I can read minds. I can help other people work smoothly together and really shine. And, I can turn into a swarm of bees."

"That...that is a lot." Raul just stares at her. "Not used to explaining your abilities, eh? Sounds like you're reading off a list. Gotta make it more natural, chica. You're speaking about it like you're flan, y'know. Sounds like some good powers, though. Really helpful in a crisis. Get people caught up in things calm. Hostage situations, crazy stuff like that."

She laughed. Like flan! Hehe.

"Sometimes folks get a little uncomfortable. The turning into bees part. But also the watching over places and mind reading. The emotion control and mind control. I promise I don't use those powers at Academy House. Or without cause. Just to investigate crimes."

"The first time I had to really push my powers, figure out what I could do, was at a rodeo. A stampeding bull. A panicked crowd. People were going to get hurt. They were going to hurt each other in their panic. It's really useful at times like that."
